Still, my style was to get to know all my students. At the beginning of each school year, I would memorize their names so that I could develop a personal rapport with them. When class was over, the girls followed me, again in single file, one by one, with their books clutched to their bosom, again staring down at the ground. I never in any way talked to them outside the classroom. So imagine my dismay arriving in America in the summer of 1965: the campus was alive with rock music; girls would sit on the lawn with their shoes off, sunning themselves, laughing, talking.
I thought we should undertake a thorough survey of Jobra. Accordingly, I launched a project, with my students’ help, to survey the village. We wanted to find out: How many of the families in the village owned cultivable land? How much land did each family have? What crops did they grow? How did landless people make a living? Who were the poor? What skills did the people have? What impediments did they see to improving their lives? How-many families could grow food to feed themselves for the whole year?
Here, I had a completely different experience. Arriving in Nashville, I was so depressed I was almost in tears. It was such a tiny insignificant airport and there was no student campus like the one I had so enjoyed at Boulder. The city looked so unattractive after the wide-open grand vistas of Boulder. Vanderbilt had only recently been desegregated, and the tiny restaurant I used, The Campus Grill, had been ‘whites only’ until six months previously. There were few foreign students, and no Bengalis.
