Populations was found to be rare, and five of the nine smallest populations produced no fertile cones in ten years. The authors measured the most likely confounding variables (soil properties and under- and overstory vegetation cover) and found no relationship with Banksia population size or cone production (Lamont et al. 1993). Inbreeding might, however, provide an alternative mechanism. By contrast, in a study of the annual herb Clarkia concinna, the size and isolation of populations were manipulated experimentally.
